CONTENTS (A) System Requirements (B) Installation & Getting Started (C) Serialization/Registration Information (D) Technical Support Contact Information (E) Compatibility and Technical Notes (A) SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Macintosh G3 (G4, G4 Dual, or faster, recommended) 256 MB RAM When using the AutoSync feature to synchronize the catalog with a large folder and file structure, the faster the machine, the better. (B) INSTALLATION & GETTING STARTED ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have Portfolio 6 Server installed on your machine, Extensis recommends that you remove it before installing Portfolio Server 7.0.4. To remove Portfolio 6 Server, drag the Portfolio 6 Server folder to the trash. Be sure to backup any catalogs that are located in your Catalogs folder that you wish to use in Portfolio Server 7.0.4. Then go into "/Library/StartupItems" and drag the Portfolio Server folder to the trash. To install Portfolio Server 7.0.4, double-click the installer and follow the instructions. If you had a previous version of Portfolio 7 Server installed, it will be stopped automatically before Portfolio Server 7.0.4 is installed. NOTE: If you had a previous version of Portfolio 7 Server installed that added its own item to the Startup/Login Items list, you should remove it by running its Server Launcher and clicking the Disable button to remove it from that list before installing Portfolio Server 7.0.4. Otherwise, there may be a conflict when you start Portfolio Server 7.0.4 and it adds its own item to the Startup/Login Items list. Use the Portfolio Server Launcher application to start and stop the server. Double-click the Server Launcher to run it. Portfolio Server 7.0.4 is automatically added to the Startup/Login items for the current user when clicking the Start button in the Server Launcher. After that, each time the current user logs in, Portfolio Server 7.0.4 automatically starts. The Launcher can also be used to stop and disable Portfolio Server 7.0.4. The Disable button removes Portfolio Server 7.0.4 from the list of Startup/Login items for the current and stops the server. The Stop button stops the server, but leaves it in the Startup/Login Items list so that the server is restarted when the current user logs in again. You will not see Portfolio Server appear in the OS X dock when it is running. Files are installed to the following folder: Extensis Portfolio 7 Server (folder) License.txt Portfolio Server Portfolio Server Read Me.rtf Server Launcher Portfolio Server User Guide.pdf Catalogs (folder) Filters (folder) Portfolio Server Files (folder) Portfolio Server Logs (folder) Services (folder) (C) SERIALIZATION/REGISTRATION INFORMATION ------------------------------------------------------------------------ You can demo Portfolio Server 7.0.4 for 30 days without a serial number. After the demo period, a serial number is required to run the server application. Your serial number is located in one of three locations: on the Portfolio CD sleeve, on the product packaging, or was sent to you via email if you purchased through our website. Enter that number to personalize your copy of Portfolio by going to File/Administer Server in Portfolio. (D) TECHNICAL SUPPORT CONTACT INFORMATION ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To reach us for technical support or general questions please use the following method: Web: http://www.extensis.com/support/ For customer service please use one of the following methods: Web: http://www.extensis.com/customerservice/ Phone: (800) 796-9798 (E) Compatibility and Technical Notes ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sharing Folders For help in configuring shared folders, we recommend using a product named SharePoints, which can be found at: "http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/". SharePoints is an application or a preference pane that makes it easy to add and delete share points like in the old Mac OS Finder. In Mac OS X, by default, you are limited to sharing only what is in your public folder in your home directory. This program makes it easy to share any folder. How to point AutoSync to files on the same machine running Portfolio Server After you have a volume or folder shared on your server machine, for other users to connect to, you will need to mount this same share on the server machine in the following way to allow AutoSync to access these same files. If the share is not mounted this way, AutoSync will not have access to the files in such a way that other users will be able to also access them. 1. In the Finder, choose Connect to Server, in the Go menu. 2. Enter "smb://localhost" or "smb://127.0.0.1" for the Server Address and click Connect. 3. Enter your login name and password for accessing the share. 4. Choose the share from the pop-up menu. 5. The share should now appear on your desktop. 6. Add an AutoSync folder to your catalog from this share. AutoSync Issues Be sure to mount all network volumes containing AutoSync folders BEFORE starting the Portfolio Server. If the network volumes are not mounted when the Portfolio Server is started the AutoSync watch folders will always appear as inaccessible. Adding AutoSync watch folders that are located on Windows volumes and connected via SMB may result in some subfolders showing up as inaccessible (folder grayed in Mac client folder tree). This issue is currently under investigation. Currently, AutoSync folders may remain out-of-sync after cataloging their contents if one or more of the files in their folder structure are named using some High ASCII characters; although, those files will still be cataloged. You can allow the AutoSync folder to go in-sync by renaming the files without using High ASCII characters. At this time, you cannot generate 256-pixel thumbnails by using Advanced Cataloging Options. To generate 256-pixel thumbnails, manually generate them by selecting the items and choosing Item>Regenerate Thumbnail. Microsoft PowerPoint must be installed on the Server machine for AutoSync to generate thumbnails for PowerPoint files. Using AutoSync with RAW files Under 10.2.x some raw (Kodak, Canon, Nikon, Fuji) images may not show a thumbnail when being cataloged by an AutoSync watch folder. Run Regenerate Thumbnail from the Item Menu to get the correct thumbnail. Under 10.3.x some raw (Kodak, Canon, Nikon, Fuji) images may not show the correct EXIF info when being cataloged by an AutoSync Watch Folder. Run the Extract Properties command from the Item Menu to get the correct EXIF info. Supported versions of client/server Portfolio 7.0.4 client will not connect to pre-7.0.4 Portfolio Server. If you are using Portfolio in a client/server environment, you must upgrade the server to 7.0.4 first then upgrade the clients. © 2004 Extensis, Inc., a Celartem company.
