Welcome to Extensis Portfolio Server 7! Portfolio Server offers powerful client/server digital asset management with much of the same high-end functionality of more expensive solutions, but at a truly affordable price, and with lightning fast implementation. The server updates network-based catalogs automatically as users add, change or remove shared files, keeping even large workgroups in perfect sync. Simply launch the installer and allow it to guide you. You must be logged in with Administrative privileges to effectively install Portfolio Server. The Portfolio Server application has no interface itself; access to Server features is handled through the standard Portfolio client application software. The Portfolio Server is a system service. This service must be started on the Server before it is active. To do so, choose Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Select Portfolio Server from the list and click Start. AutoSync: When using an AutoSync watch folder on the server, for use on a domain, the service must log on as an account that has access to all necessary asset folders. Assets can be anything that users are likely to add to Portfolio catalogs. This can be done by creating a new account for the service or using an existing account with the necessary privileges. When installing Portfolio Server in a Microsoft Windows Workgroup environment, the Portfolio Server service should be logged into a non-administration level account on the server. To do so, view the properties of the service, choose the Log On tab, check This Account and enter the account information. Any other machine on the workgroup must have the same server account created, yet does not need to be logged in. Files are installed to the directory chosen during installation (usually within an Extensis folder located in the Program Files folder). The first time you attempt to administer a Portfolio Server you are prompted to enter the serial code. You can also access the Serial Codes dialog box from the Server Administration dialog box (File > Administer Servers > [select server] > Administer > Serialize - in the Portfolio application). Multi-user serial numbers (licenses) allow users to connect to the Portfolio Server, up to the limit of users for that serial number. The multi-user serial number is entered at each workstation when the Portfolio application (client) is installed. Make a copy of your version 6 catalog in the Catalogs folder, located next to the version 7 server application. When you open the catalog in the Portfolio application, it will prompt you to convert it for use in version 7. Catalogs created in version 6 with a block size set to 1K in the Preferences cannot be converted to version 7 before their block size is converted. Please see the Extensis Technical Support Knowledge Base for information on this topic. Version 6 Saved Views and HTML templates are not supported in version 7. The Saved Views feature has been expanded to offer additional layout and display controls. Static and dynamic webpage generation is now handled by a new Extensis product, NetPublish, which has a new template system that offers greatly expanded functionality for making webpages and websites. When adding an AutoSync watch folder, you must navigate to it through the network (My Network Places). This is to ensure the path will be accessible to Portfolio client applications using the catalog. A converted catalog must be closed after conversion, then reopened, for AutoSync to start synchronizing folders. QuickTime 6.4, or newer, is required to be installed on the server machine for some file formats to be cataloged properly. Microsoft PowerPoint is required to be installed on the server machine for AutoSync to generate thumbnails for PowerPoint files. --------- Extensis Portfolio Server software program copyright by Extensis, Inc. 1998-2004.
