Serializing SQL Connect: You will need to serialize the SQL Service via the Client "Server Administration" dialog. Using the UnInstall utility: In order to remove Portfolio SQL Connect 5.0 you will need to run the Add/Remove Programs option from the Control Panel. Setting Up the SQL Connect ========================== A few basic steps must be taken prior to being able to use Portfolio's SQL Connect component: 1 - Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 or 7.0 must be installed on a system. 2 - A new database must be created on the SQL Server. When determining the database size, as a rule of thumb, figure each record will take 15k in the Portfolio SQL catalog. It is always best to overestimate the amount of space required. (Note that SQL Server 7.0 does not require that a fixed size limit for a database be established). 3 - A user must be created with database owner (dbo) priveleges. The existing system administrator account can also be used. [For more information on the above steps, please consult your SQL Server manual.] 4 - On the machine running Portfolio Server 5.0, be sure that the appropriate ODBC and SQL Server drivers have been installed. These allow the Portfolio Server to communicate with the SQL Server. 5 - From a Portfolio 5.0 client, Administer the Portfolio Server as normal. 6 - Click on 'Serialize' to add the SQL Serial number. 7 - Create an SQL Server listing by clicking the 'Add Server' button. Enter the appropriate information (i.e. ODBC Driver, IP Address, Username/Password) 8 - Once back in the Portfolio Server Admin dialog, choose 'Serve SQL...' 9 - In the Serve SQL dialog, you'll see a list of databases available on the SQL Server. Choose a database and select 'Serve...' 10 - You'll be prompted for SQL information. Enter the appropriate information. The database will then be examined, and after a brief pause, opened. You are now in Administrator mode. Modify the database structure as necessary, and then close the database (or switch to a lower access level). 11- Your users should now be able to see the SQL database by connecting to the Portfolio Server as usual. ----------- Portfolio software program copyright by Extensis Corporation. ©1999-2000
