If the latest version/service pack of your OS isn't listed, don't fret. Portfolio should work OK. However, vendors and users never know until Microsoft or Apple release a version/SP what is 'in' the release. For instance, the release OS 10.3 broke some menus in Portfolio v6.1.So do allow a little time for testing. If you're running the latest OS, drop a line to Extensis - making clear your OS version. At worst you may hear some features don't work - but most likely an later update will fix them.
Technical Requirements for running elements of Portfolio v8 and NetPublish v8 are shown below. For more detailed information see the readme files for the appropriate version. The data below is based on published data from Extensis. Mac users with Intel chips should use v8.1.1+. New OS releases after v8.5 launch such as Mac OS 10.5 are likely to result in updates being issued to some or all modules.
Portfolio 8.5 is not backward compatible with previous versions, and all clients and app servers must be running the same major/minor version (i.e. v8.5.x). Older catalogues, e.g. v8.1.1, will need to be upgraded to v8.5 on first use. This is not a difficult procedure but if you think you may want to revert to the older version, take a backup as there is no rollback. A client can usually open an unserved version+1 FDB but this should only be tried in a crisis, e.g. retrieving data after an unintended update; it should not be attempted for production work and is certainly not a supported configuration.

Notes: 1. Since v7.0, there is a single installer for Portfolio Server & SQL Connect. SQL Connect is enabled via the purchase of a separate serial code. 2. For more metrics on hardware spec vs. usage see page 14 of the version 8 [sic] Server User Guide and also page 13 of the v8.5 manual update. It's important to note that the SQL Server (whatever vendor type) need not be installed on the same server as Portfolio Server. You should regard QuickTime (you only need the free version) as part of the basic requirement as Portfolio uses a number of its filters. Mac users should have QT installed by default, Windows users will need to download and install it. Do a full or custom install and not the basic install to ensure that modules like the 'still imaging' are available to Portfolio. Ideally, on a new PC install QT before Portfolio; otherwise, at minimum, close and re-open the Portfolio client for QT's filters to be available.

With Mac, there is unlikely to be further development of the 'classic' environment. Due to issues with the still emergent OS-X, the v6.1 client requires Jaguar (10.2.x) or later. The OS-X native Server requirements are less clear but are best assumed as the same as for the client.
